Rohan de Mel is a Senior Mental Health Occupational Therapist, with over 15 years experience in public mental health.
Rohan has worked in a variety of mental health settings, including community case management with adults and young people, telephone triage, emergency, acute in-patient and more recently workforce education and development. Rohan has skills in mental health and occupational therapy specific assessment, supportive counselling, family work, distress tolerance and coping skills, promoting adaptive living skills, community engagement and connection, social skill building, promoting activity health and routine, therapeutic groups and much more.
Rohan’s work in public mental health has given him the opportunity to work closely with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), facilitating referrals, completing supportive assessments and playing a key role in care planning. Rohan’s experience in mental health has also supported him in taking on roles in lecturing and tutoring at university level.
Rohan is a passionate Occupational Therapist, who is committed to supporting those who experience mental health challenges to engage or re-engage with the life they deserve and value. Rohan utilizes the recovery model in his approach to practice, recognizing the value of; connection with others, hope in recovery, individual identity, finding meaning and supporting empowerment.
Rohan recognizes that change and recovery is an incredibly challenging process and will require individuals to ‘work hard’, but through commitment and with the right therapeutic supports, he believes all can live their best lives and ‘play hard.’
Rohan has experience working with a number of mental health diagnosis, including; Psychosis, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, Depression, Anxiety and Personality Disorder. In addition to mental health diagnosis, Rohan also has experience working with those who live with Intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders and Substance use disorders. Whilst Rohan has experience with various diagnostic groups, it important to note that he always identifies and works with the person first.
In addition to Rohan’s Occupational Therapy degree, he has also completed a Certificate 3 in fitness and the head trainer of ‘Work Hard Play Hard gym.’ As a part of his role, Rohan runs daily fitness groups and trains small groups in a more personalized way.
Rohan’s skills and experience pertains to youth (16-25) and adult mental health (25-65), though fosters hopes of engaging in further studies in the field of Pediatric Occupational Therapy.
Rohan operates ‘Work Hard Play Hard Occupational Therapy Service’ as a sole trader (under ABN 97 705 077 607) and provides part time clinical in-put.to his client’s.

Conducting basic sensory modulation assessments to identify how environmental changes can promote adaptive functioning.
Developing comprehensive wellness plans that are aimed at supporting engagement in life/occupational functioning, including life skills such as self-care, shopping, budgeting, cooking and cleaning.
Integrating elements of exercise, healthy meal prep and eating to promote both mental and physical health benefit.
