The main focus of Relaxation Massage is relieving stress-related tension and increasing blood circulation throughout the body. While treating aches and pains is often a by-product of relaxation massage, the primary focus is helping you to relax and to shut off from your worldly cares. You can expect a meditative atmosphere with calming music and aromatic oil- throughout your massage light to moderate pressure will be applied, determined by your comfortability. For a full body treatment I recommend an hour long appointment, however we can determine areas of focus if a shorter treatment is necessary.
Sports massage helps to assist in muscular conditioning for specific sports/ excersice It can be performed before, during and after training, depending on what goal is to be achieved. The goal of sports massage is to increase and maintain flexibility, prevent injury from occurring and to assist in healing if injury has occured. It is not a one type fits all massage as it is dependent on the goals and the condition of the athlete. Generally it is quite a fast paced massage, incorporating active stretching, trigger point therapy and moderate to firm pressure. Remedial massage aims to treat muscles that are injured, knotted, tense or immobile and improve muscle integrity by increasing blood flow and range of motion. The practitioner will aim to balance the length, tone and tension of muscles and tendons, which restores the correct position of the bones, increases blood flow and helps heal injuries. The knock on effects of easing and stabilising the muscles could mean improving associated health ailments such as headaches, lower back pain, sciatic pain, restricted range of movement etc.
Remedial massage is used to locate and repair damaged areas of the body and speed up the body’s own healing processes. As with sports massage, there is no one size fits all for this type of Massage, it is based on the condition of the client. The pressure applied in this treatment can either be strong and deep or gentle and shallow, depending on the problem and comfort level of the client.
Trigger point therapy (TPT) is often used in Remedial Massage- this is when certain tight points in the muscles are pressed on for a prolonged period of time with the goal of triggering a tension release response in that particular muscle. This can be uncomfortable but with communication and deep breathing the effects of TPT can be very relieving.
Deep tissue massage is similar to relaxation massage in the way it takes a more whole body approach, however there is a greater focus on improving muscular integrity by getting deeper into the muscles. Deep tissue techniques are often incorporated into Sports and Remedial Massage Treatments. You can expect medium to strong pressure and it is quite normal to experience DOMS ( delayed onset muscle soreness) a day or two after. It is always important to communicate pain tolerance with massage practitioner, you should not be in excruciating pain.
